The tragedy is that the era of the great social movements is over.  They belong to yesterday’s newspaper to be sampled as nostalgia.
It is clear that we are in a transitional time. The non-party political process that gave us Aruna Roy and Medha Patkar is tired, while political parties are witless. Old memories make no sense to a generation literally born a decade after the Emergency. One cannot tap into the historical unconscious because current memory is illiterate about nationalism, Naxalbari or Narmada.
